John C. McDonald Regional Transplant Center's Mission Is
"To provide services to fulfill the highest expectations for outcomes and quality transplantation services."
Dr. John C. McDonald introduced organ transplantation in north Louisiana in 1977 at LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport (LSUHSC-S). Dr. McDonald, who became chairman and professor of Transplantation Surgery at LSUHSC-S, forged a unique partnership with then Willis-Knighton Health System CEO James K. Elrod to assure access to and funding for the transplant program. With the support of Dr. Ike Muslow, Dean of the College of Medicine, the two men created the WK/LSUHSC Regional Transplant Center. In 2013 the center was renamed the “John C. McDonald Regional Transplant Center” in his memory.
The John C. McDonald Regional Transplant Center is the only transplant center in north Louisiana. More than 2,000 organ transplantations have been performed since the program’s inception, drawing patients from the Ark-La-Tex and beyond.
