Blood flow restriction training (BFRT) involves the use of a pneumatic tourniquet system to restrict blood flow. A cuff is applied to an arm or leg to partially restrict arterial blood flow and completely restrict venous blood flow during exercise. Over the past 20 years, there has been a proliferation of research investigating the effects of BFRT on the development of skeletal muscle hypertrophy and strength. Physical, occupational, and speech therapists in Willis Knighton’s Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation aim to be the providers of choice in our community. We are excited to offer state of the art technologies and innovative rehabilitation approaches to the people we serve. Blood flow restriction training is a promising new technique we offer to restore skeletal muscle function and address physical impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions identified in our patients.
