Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)
What is Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is a procedure to remove excess skin and fat tissue from the eye area.
Why is it Performed?
Blepharoplasty can correct drooping upper eyelids, excess skin of the lower eyelids, and/or puffiness of the upper or lower eyelids. This procedure can also create upper eyelid folds.
What Steps Are Taken Prior to the Procedure?
Your doctor will likely perform a physical exam, vision testing, and an exam of the eyelid and supporting structures. You may be asked to stop taking some medicines up to one week before the procedure, like anti-inflammatory drugs and blood thinners.
How is the Procedure Performed?
Excess skin, muscle, and/or fat is removed from the upper or lower eyelid as indicated. The procedure is typically performed with a combination of intravenous conscious sedation and local anesthesia.
What Can I Expect After the Procedure?
Each patient responds differently to surgery, but a small amount of swelling and bruising around the eyes is typical. You physician will give you detailed post-operative instructions prior to discharge that will include wound care, activity level, and limitations of sun exposure. Your stitches will likely be removed in 5-7 days.
