What is torticollis?

Torticollis, commonly known as wry neck, is the contraction of the neck muscle called the sternocleidomastoid. This causes a posturing or tilting of the head.

What are the most common symptoms?

Symptoms of torticollis include enlargement of the neck muscles, tilting of the head to one side, limited range of motion of the head and neck, or muscle spasms of the neck and upper back muscles.

How is torticollis treated?

Torticollis is most often treated with physical therapy alone. Surgical lengthening of the neck muscles is reserved for very specific situations. If you suspect your child has torticollis, please call our office to obtain an evaluation with on of our cleft and craniofacial surgeons.
