Overview

This surgery repairs a weak spot in your abdominal wall. It prevents organs and tissues from bulging out uncomfortably. That's a condition we call a "hernia."

Preparation

To begin, you lie on a surgical table. You're given medicine that relaxes you or puts you to sleep. The surgeon makes small openings in your abdomen. One is for a special camera called a "laparoscope." The others are for tiny instruments.

Repair

The surgeon pushes any bulging tissues back into your abdomen. Then, your abdominal wall is repaired with sutures. Your surgeon may also sew a mesh patch over the hernia to make it stronger.

End of procedure

When the surgery is done, the openings are closed and bandaged. You're watched in a recovery room for a brief time. Follow your surgeon's plan for a safe recovery.
