Volunteering
If you’re a caring adult who enjoys helping others, you may be interested in becoming a hospice volunteer. As a hospice volunteer you provide comfort for people as they approach the end of their lives.
You will take on companionship duties for several hours, performing nonmedical tasks and bringing relief for the hospice patient’s regular caregiver.
What kinds of things might this include?
- Chatting with the patient.
- Fixing a sandwich.
- Reading to the patient.
- Talking about their life and experiences, even writing them down.
- Taking them outside to watch birds.
- Listening to music or watching a movie together.
- Going for a walk.
- Watering plants.
- Singing a favorite hymn together.
- Picking up something from the store for the patient.
- Walking the patient’s dog.
- Sitting quietly and holding the patient’s hand.
- Creating a craft project.
If you don’t feel comfortable working directly with the patients, you can offer support with administrative tasks in the hospice office.
Being a hospice volunteer is a rewarding thing to do, bring a break in the daily routine of the patient’s household. You become a part of the patient’s care team and, at the same time, you enhance your personal growth.
