Shreveport and Bossier City are located on the Red River of the South in northwest Louisiana. With quick proximity to east Texas and southwestern Arkansas, the area is called the Ark-La-Tex.

Shreveport-Bossier offers many of the big-city amenities but retains the comfortable feel of small town America. People are friendly. They want to get to know you. It’s not a place for those who wish to remain anonymous!

Census projections for 2010 place the combined population of the Shreveport-Bossier City metropolitan area at just over 409,000. Schools
Despite the image of the South often portrayed in the movies, there are islands of intellect in the South. And it’s clear that students from Shreveport-Bossier can receive an education that will allow them to compete with the very best across the nation.

Some of the top public schools in the state and nation are found in Shreveport and Bossier City. Shreveport and Caddo Parish (county) have instituted a magnet system of schools which includes performing arts, fundamental schools, and laboratory schools. These magnet schools attract some of the area’s top teachers as does the pay scale, among the top in the state. Magnet schools are available at the elementary, middle school and high school level. Shreveport-Bossier schools produce an impressive crop of national merit scholars each year.

If private schools are preferred, the community has both religious and secular private schools with exceptional educational opportunities. Small classes, personal attention, and moral/ethical training are generally the hallmarks of these schools. Some also have great sports teams and most offer outstanding extracurricular activities. Students from some of the top private schools routinely gain admission to top universities.

Higher education is readily available in Shreveport-Bossier. LSU in Shreveport has top academic rankings, often rivaling the academics of LSU in Baton Rouge (with a much smaller funding base)! Centenary College has been recognized for years in U.S. News & World Report’s annual edition rating of top colleges in America. Northwestern State University offers a four-year nursing college in Shreveport. Bossier Parish Community College and Southern University-Shreveport offer a wide range of two-year degrees as well as community education classes. Finally, LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport is a top-performing medical school with a Biomedical Research Foundation located in an adjacent building on the medical school/hospital campus.

Activities
Something is always happening in Shreveport-Bossier. Cultural, recreational and entertainment options for adults and youngsters. Festivals start with our family-friendly Mardi Gras at the beginning of each year and wind up with a popular holiday trail of lights in December. You won’t want to miss the 4th of July fireworks on the riverfront or Mudbug Madness (the crawfish festival). Need something to keep the kids busy? Try gymnastics, soccer, lacrosse, T-ball, baseball, dance (ballet, tap, modern), swimming, cheerleading, golf, art, orchestra, theater/drama, choir – or a trip to the science museum.

Worship
Spiritual grounding is often here, and Shreveport-Bossier residents have a strong connection to their religious institutions. Despite the predominance of Christian churches, Shreveport-Bossier residents open their hearts and arms to residents of all faiths. In fact, the community boasts houses of worship and religious groups representing Jewish and Muslim congregants as well as people from Hindu, Buddhist and other faiths. From simple wooden churches, to synagogues and temples, to mega churches – a place of worship is easy to find in Shreveport-Bossier.

Retirees
Want to bring Mom and Dad with you? Shreveport-Bossier has long been a retirement mecca for military retirees who were stationed here at Barksdale Air Force Base.
