R. Shane Barton, MD, MBA, MPH, MS, FAAOS, FAOA, FACS, has returned to Willis Knighton Health as executive medical director of orthopaedic surgery and rehabilitation,
and has joined Willis Knighton Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine Pierremont, 7925 Youree Drive, Suite 200. His expertise ranges from complex operative reconstruction of the shoulder, elbow and knee to the specialized medical issues of athletes.
While Dr. Barton is part of the Willis Knighton Physician Network, he also maintains an academic appointment as a professor of orthopaedic surgery at LSU Health Shreveport. At LSU Health he was chair of the orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine
department and served as assistant dean of faculty development. Since coming to the Ark-La-Tex in 2005, he has been a team physician for many regional sports clubs and schools.
A native of east Texas, Dr. Barton graduated from Texas A&M University where he was a Presidential Endowed Scholar studying computer engineering. Before entering Baylor College of Medicine, he worked at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, focusing on robotic vision and image processing and earning research honors for his contributions. He graduated with honors from Baylor medical school as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He completed his residency at Baylor in orthopaedic surgery before pursuing a fellowship in shoulder and sports medicine at Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts General Hospital. While at Harvard he was an assistant team physician for the New England Patriots.
Demonstrating his commitment to lifelong learning, Dr. Barton earned a Master of Public Health from LSU Health Shreveport, and an Executive MBA, and a Master of Science in Healthcare Management and Leadership from The University of Texas at Dallas. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons
International Committee, representing the organization globally in medical education, professional development and innovation.
