The results of a landmark multi-institutional clinical study show proton therapy is superior to traditional radiation therapy in the treatment of certain head and neck cancers. Willis Knighton Cancer Center’s Sanford Katz, MD, radiation oncologist, participated in the study. Results were presented this year at major international meetings in Chicago and Singapore.
At the same time, a comprehensive critical review and analysis of published data, reported in the journal Head and Neck, also demonstrated better outcomes with proton therapy compared to non-proton radiation, both in terms of better responses, higher cure rates and less side effects.
Dr. Katz is a co-author on both of these studies.
“From the time that we started our proton therapy program 10 years ago, the benefits of the advanced cancer treatment was evident, particularly with respect to less side effects,” Dr. Katz said. “It comes as no surprise that studies are now also demonstrating improved local control and overall survival advantages with protons. It is part of our mission at Willis Knighton to provide such advanced state-of-the-art treatment and to participate in cutting edge research that advances the field of cancer care.”
