WK Proton Therapy Center is hosting the annual Ion Beam Applications (IBA) Proteus Users Meeting March 17 and 18. Located at Willis-Knighton Cancer Center, the WK Proton Therapy Center is a cohost with the Texas Center for Proton Therapy in Dallas, where the group will conclude their meeting on March 19 and 20. IBA provides proton therapy solutions for the treatment of cancer. More than 170 customers and users from four continents and 19 different countries are expected to participate.

The Shreveport meetings will be held at Sam’s Town Hotel & Casino, with participants transported to the Willis-Knighton Cancer Center and the WK Proton Therapy Center during their event. There, Willis-Knighton physicians and staff will demonstrate the equipment and detail their story as the first cancer center to offer proton therapy using Proteus®ONE, the world’s first compact proton therapy system. The technology features pencil beam precision to target tumors while decreasing the risk of side effects and long-term complications. The result is improved patient outcomes and quality of life.

“This international meeting is an opportunity for everyone to come together and discuss the operation of proton therapy systems, review challenging clinical cases and help determine the path for advancements in the technology,” says Greg Sonnenfeld, director of Willis-Knighton Cancer Center. 

Speakers will include Lane R. Rosen, MD, medical director of the radiation oncology and proton therapy department at Willis-Knighton Cancer Center; Sanford Katz, MD, and Michael Durci, MD, radiation oncologists with Willis-Knighton Cancer Center. Other notable speakers include Jim Metz, MD, chair of radiation oncology at the University of Pennsylvania, Jerome Doyen, MD, radiation oncologist from Nice, France, and Hakan Nystrom, PhD, physicist from Uppsala, Sweden.
