Splenectomy
Overview
This surgery removes your spleen. That's an organ in your abdomen. It filters your blood and helps your body fight infection. You may need this surgery if your spleen has ruptured. The surgery may also treat some medical conditions.
Preparation
To begin, you are given medicine to put you to sleep. If your surgery uses a laparoscopic camera, small openings are made in your skin. This is for the camera and other instruments. If you're having open surgery, an incision is made. The surgery method used depends on your needs.
Removal
Next, your surgeon carefully separates your spleen. It's freed from its connections. Then, it's taken out of your body.
End of procedure
After the surgery, you're watched in a recovery room as you wake up. You'll be told when you can go home. Follow your surgeon's instructions for a safe recovery.
