Preparing for Surgery: CHG Skin Cleanser (Soap, Shower)

Overview

Before you have surgery, you may be asked to wash your skin with a soap containing a chemical called CHG (chlorhexidine gluconate). This antiseptic eliminates many of the germs on your skin. It keeps your surgical site clean and free from infection. This video shows basic CHG showering directions. To get the full benefit, follow the directions for the specific soap you are asked to use.

Preparation

Before you use a CHG soap, take a normal shower. Wash your hair with regular shampoo, and wash your body with regular soap. Rinse your hair and body well. Now wet a fresh washcloth and turn off the water. Put the CHG soap on the clean washcloth.

Applying the CHG Soap

Apply this soap to your body from the neck down. Be sure to wash the back of your neck and your underarms. Wash your belly button and your groin. Wash your legs down to your feet and toes. Avoid the vaginal area or the end of the penis. Also, avoid the rectal area. Be careful that you do not get the soap in your eyes or ears. Gently wash your body for five minutes. Don't scrub too hard. Pay special attention to your surgical site, making sure to wash it thoroughly.

Finishing

When you are finished, turn on the water and rinse the soap from your body. Do not wash again with regular soap. After rinsing, pat yourself dry with a clean towel and put on clean clothes. Do not use any powders, lotions, cosmetics or hair products after your shower. If you have questions about using your CHG soap or preparing for surgery, talk to your doctor.
