Laser Treatment for Nail Fungus
Overview
During this quick and painless procedure, laser light is used to penetrate the toenail and eliminate a fungal infection in the nail bed and nail plate.
Preparation
Before the procedure, patients will need to remove any nail polish or nail decorations. The physician may use a burr to file the affected nails down and reduce their thickness.
Procedure
The affected nails are cleansed, and the physician uses a handheld laser device to bombard the toenails with intense bursts of light. The laser causes the fungus to die without harming surrounding skin and nail tissue.
End of Procedure
Once the procedure is complete, the nails may be covered with an ointment or cream designed to inhibit fungal growth. Most patients will notice healthy toenail growth within three months. Multiple treatments may be necessary to successfully eliminate the fungal infection.
