Revision Hip Surgery

Overview

This surgery treats an artificial hip that has become infected or has begun to wear out. During this surgery, your hip implant is removed and replaced with new components.

Preparation

To begin, you are put to sleep. The surgeon makes an incision to reach your hip joint. The surgeon checks your joint for signs of disease and wear.

Removing damaged parts

Next, the surgeon removes all the parts of your implant. Some of your bone may need to be cut to do this. The surgeon trims away scar tissue and old bone cement. If you have a bone infection, the infected parts of the bone may be removed, too. For a bad infection, your surgeon may need to stop here. You'll come back again for a second surgery after your bone has had time to heal.

Implanting new parts

Finally, your surgeon implants the new artificial hip components. There are many styles of implants. You and your surgeon will choose the type that's right for you. Then, your incision is closed and bandaged.

End of procedure

After the surgery, you are watched in a recovery room as you wake up. Your surgeon will tell you when you can go home. Follow your surgeon's advice for a safe recovery.
