Femoroacetabular Impingement Surgery (Arthroscopic Method)

Overview

This surgery fixes problems caused by a poorly-shaped hip joint. That's a condition known as femoroacetabular impingement. We call it "FAI." The surgeon will repair your hip without making a large incision.

Preparation

To begin, you are given medicine to put you to sleep, or to make you feel numb and relaxed. The surgeon makes a few tiny openings in your skin. A viewing device called an "arthroscope" is put into one. Tiny surgical instruments are put into the others as needed.

Procedure

The surgeon studies your joint. You may have torn tissues, damaged cartilage, bone spurs or other problems. Your surgeon fixes these. Any extra bone on your ball and socket is trimmed away. That will let the ball and socket glide smoothly.

End of Procedure

When the surgery is done, the openings in your skin are closed. You'll be watched for a brief time, and then you can go home. Your healthcare provider will give you tips to help you heal.
