Deep Vein Thrombosis Prevention
Overview
Deep vein thrombosis is a type of blood clot that can develop when you sit still for long periods. It can also be caused by certain medical conditions that make the blood clot more easily. You can take precautions to reduce your risk for developing this dangerous condition.
Keep Moving
First, move your legs frequently. Don't sit still for extended periods. Don't sit with your legs crossed. If you are traveling in a car, make frequent stops so you can get out and walk around. If you are traveling in an airplane, get out of your seat and walk the aisle occasionally. Stand on your toes and raise your heels off the floor. Then, stand on your heels and raise your toes. This helps keep the blood flowing through your legs.
Drink Water, Take Your Medications
You should also drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated. Avoid caffeine and alcohol. Take any medications that you should be taking. If you are at a high risk for clots, you may have been prescribed a blood thinner. It's very important to take this medication as directed to keep a clot from forming.
Get Healthy
If you are a smoker, seek help to quit. If you are obese, seek help to lose weight. Adopting a healthier lifestyle will reduce your risk of clots.
Compression Stockings
You may be advised to wear tight socks called compression stockings. These help your circulation. They squeeze your legs to help blood move up through your veins and back to your heart. They keep blood from pooling in the veins of your legs. By following these simple steps, you can prevent deep vein thrombosis.
