Pneumonia for Kids
Overview
You're feeling sick, and you're having some trouble
breathing. The doctor says you have "pneumonia."
Let's learn all about it.
Germs in your lungs
Pneumonia is an infection in your lungs. Those are
the two big balloon-like sacs in your chest that fill
with air when you breathe in. How do they get
infected? Well, it usually happens when you
breathe in air that has germs in it. The germs go
into your lungs. They get stuck inside, and they
make it hard for your lungs to do their job.
How it hurts you
What does pneumonia feel like? Well, it can make
you tired, and you may have a fever and chills. You
may cough a lot, and your chest may hurt. And, you
may have trouble taking deep breaths.
Getting better
So, how do we treat pneumonia? You need to get
plenty of rest so your body can fight the infection.
We may give you medicine to help you feel better.
You may get breathing treatments, too. Sometimes,
if a kid gets very sick from pneumonia, they have to
go stay in the hospital for a little while. But most
kids get better at home. Your doctor will tell you
what you need to do to help your lungs heal.
