Common Cold for Kids
Overview
Have you ever been sick? Did you sneeze and cough? Did your throat hurt? We call this a "common cold," or just a "cold." Let's learn about colds and how to fight them.
Tiny invaders
Most colds are caused by tiny things we call "viruses." They are much too small to see. A virus gets into your body through your eyes, nose or mouth. A virus can fly through the air when a sick person sneezes or coughs. It lands on things you touch. You
can get a virus on your hands and not even know it. If it gets into your body, you can get sick.
How you feel
What does having a cold feel like? It makes you feel tired, and your head may hurt. Your nose may be runny or stuffy. You may sneeze a lot. A cold can give you a sore throat and a cough. And, it may be a little hard to breathe.
Getting better
We don't know how to cure a cold. But you can do things to feel better. You should rest and drink a lot of fluids while you're sick. That gives your body strength. You may be able to take medicine, too. Usually after about a week or a little longer, your
body beats the virus. Then, you can get back to doing the things you like to do.
