Chickenpox for Kids
Overview
You have itchy red bumps on your skin. And, you don't feel very good. The doctor says you have "chickenpox." Let's learn all about it.
How you get it
What is chickenpox, exactly? Well, it's a sickness caused by a tiny germ we call a "virus." Despite its funny name, you don't catch the chickenpox from chickens. You get it from being near other people who have chickenpox.
How it makes you feel
What does this virus do to you? It makes you feel tired and sick. You may get a fever and a headache. And you may not want to eat very much. You also get lots of red bumps on your skin. These bumps may itch a lot, but you need to try very had not to scratch
them. The bumps will soon pop and turn into scabs. After a few weeks, they go away.
Getting better
When you have chickenpox, you rest at home so your body can fight the virus. You need to stay away from other people so they don't get sick, too. You may take medicine to help with the itching and fever. You'll feel better again soon.
