Soft Tissue Sarcoma
Overview
This is an uncommon type of cancer that forms in soft tissues of the body. Soft tissue sarcomas can develop in fat, muscle, or fibrous tissues. They can form in tissues of the blood vessels or nerves. They are most often found in the arms, legs or abdomen, but they can develop in any part of the body. This cancer can also spread from one part of the body to another.
Causes
Doctors don't know what causes soft tissue sarcomas. They form when cells mutate and begin to grow and divide abnormally. They form one or more tumors. Because sarcomas can develop in so many types of tissues, there are many different forms of this disease. Some types tend to affect children. Others most commonly affect adults. Different types of sarcomas can act in different ways.
Symptoms
Symptoms can vary from person to person. In many cases, a sarcoma will cause a noticeable lump or swelling in the body. This may be painless at first. As the cancer continues to grow, the tumor may get so big that it presses against nerves or other structures. This can cause pain.
Treatment
Treatment options depend on the type of sarcoma and the stage of the disease. Options include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy or other methods. Your doctor can develop a plan that is right for your needs.
