Metastatic Breast Cancer

This is breast cancer that has spread to other parts of your body. We also call it "stage IV" breast cancer. This is the most advanced stage. It can affect you in different ways, depending on where the cancer cells have moved to.

How it spreads

How do these cells spread? They move through your lymph nodes and blood vessels. They can go into organs like the liver and lungs. They can go into your bones. And, they can spread to your brain. The traveling cells make new tumors in these places. But because the cancer started in your breast, we still call it "breast cancer."

Symptoms

When you have metastatic breast cancer, you may feel tired, and you may lose weight without trying. You can have other symptoms, too, depending on where the cancer is growing. For example, cancer in your liver could cause things like jaundice and nausea. Cancer in your lungs may cause coughing and chest pain. Cancer in your bones could cause bone pain and fractures. And cancer in your brain can cause headaches, seizures and other problems.
