Maternal/Fetal Medicine

Maternal/fetal medicine is a medical specialty that manages the health of mother and fetus during pregnancy, particularly those who are at high risk for complications. These specialists care for mothers-to-be who have preexisting health problems or who are likely to experience pregnancy-related complications, including:

  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Pre-eclampsia
  • Preterm labor
  • Pregnancy with multiples (twins, triplets, etc.)

They also diagnose and monitor fetus development, identifying problems that may be treated either during the pregnancy or immediately following delivery.
