Dr. Norman Zaffater Implants Lens to Correct Astigmatism, Distant and Near Vision During Cataract Surgery

4/26/2017

Dr. ZaffaterNorman Zaffater, MD, of Zaffater Eye Center is the first physician in Shreveport-Bossier to implant the ReSTOR® Multifocal TORIC intraocular lens (IOL) during cataract surgery. Dr. Zaffater performed the surgery on Monday, April 24, at the WK Bossier Medical Pavilion outpatient surgery center.

The ReSTOR Multifocal Toric IOL offers patients with astigmatism the full range of vision, near, intermediate and far. The lens treats both presbyopia (an age-related condition that makes it more difficult to see things at near distances) and astigmatism (an imperfection in the curvature of the eye).

“Treating patients with astigmatism who needed cataract surgery in the past often meant that they would need additional vision correction, such as corneal incisions, laser surgery, or continue to wear glasses or contact lenses, following the surgery, “ Dr. Zaffater said. “This new lens has the potential to allow individuals with astigmatism to have clear vision without any additional assistance with glasses or contacts, whether they are working on the computer or driving, playing cards or playing golf.”

According to Dr. Zaffater, this lens is ideal for patients who have astigmatism and want clear vision for all purposes. Although it is typically offered to patients who require cataract surgery, he notes that it is also available for astigmatism correction in patients without cataracts whose astigmatism is so pronounced that it makes them unsuitable for LASIK vision correction.

Dr. Zaffater also offers the original ReSTOR lens for cataract patients without significant corneal astigmatism.

Dr. Zaffater has been in practice in Bossier City since 1997 and is part of the Willis-Knighton Physician Network. His office is located on the fourth floor of the Medical Pavilion.
