The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) has awarded the Willis-Knighton Heart & Vascular Institute at Willis-Knighton Medical Center with its “3 star” rating for quality of cardiac surgery. This widely recognized comprehensive rating system is the gold standard for rating cardiac surgery.
“This is one more way which confirms our commitment to our community’s health,” said Kathy Walker, director of the Heart & Vascular Institute. “We were able to achieve this three-star rating because of our physicians and staff as well as the cutting-edge, comprehensive cardiac program we have here at Willis-Knighton.”
The Society of Thoracic Surgeons has recently developed a comprehensive rating system that allows for comparisons regarding the quality of cardiac surgery among hospitals across the country. Approximately 12 to 15 percent of hospitals receive the “3 star” rating, which denotes the highest category of quality. In the current analysis of national data covering the period from January 2011 through December 2011, the cardiac surgery performance of Willis-Knighton’s Heart & Vascular Institute was found to lie in the highest quality tier, thereby receiving the “3 star” rating.
