Appendectomy

Overview

This is a surgery for appendicitis. That's a painful swelling of your appendix, a small organ connected to your large intestine.

Preparation

To begin, your skin is numbed and you are given medicine to make you drowsy. Or, you may be put to sleep. A small cut is made in your skin. Or, your surgeon may make a few small openings in your skin for a special camera, called a "laparoscope," and other instruments.

Removing the Appendix

The surgeon carefully removes your appendix. Your intestine is closed with stitches. If your appendix burst open, the area around your intestines may need to be cleaned. This will stop an infection.

End of Procedure and Aftercare

When your surgery is done, the openings in your skin are closed. Most people can go home within a day or two. Your doctor will give you tips to help your recovery.
